The world of high fashion was buzzing, tweeting, and Facebook-ing with excitement this week as Spanish luxury label Balenciaga confirmed the appointment of style superstar Alexander Wang to the position of Creative Director. The appointment, which began today, Dec. 3, puts the 28 year-old Taiwanese-American designer at one of high-fashion's most coveted positions.
"I
am deeply honored to embark on this new role for a brand and house that I have
such a great admiration and respect for," Wang stated.
Wang,
originally of San Francisco, has made quite a name for himself in his
career so far. His designs, which embody cool downtown-chic, 90's-esque style,
and embrace masculine yet feminine womens’ wear looks are hugely popular in the
fashion world, garnering large followings and much critical acclaim-even
landing him, at 24, a Vogue Fashion Fund Award.
While
many are not surprised that Wang secured such a prominent position, there
is lots of speculation as to what such an appointment will do for the brand.
For some, Balenciaga, known for their eye toward innovation
and luxury/couture designs, doesn't seem even remotely similar to Wang's
slouch-chic, relaxed fit designs.
But we
are optimistic--fashion is about innovation. New styles are created everyday
from "old" looks, and blending different looks
almost always creates something new, better, and more beautiful than
either originally was.
Congratulations
Alexander Wang! We look forward to your work!
