Researchers in London are developing a device that can scan and measure the bodies of online shoppers, offering accurate measurements for consumers that do not know their sizes. This innovative technology, developed by the London College of Fashion, is designed to help shoppers spend more on clothes online, addressing concerns that shopping online does not give the shopper the chance to actually try on and see themselves in the product like they could in an actual store.
The potentially breakthrough device is actually being used in stores across the globe, including Bloomingdale's. There is also talk of developing a scanner that works through the shopper's webcam, but the researchers at the London College of Fashion are confident in their product, which uses images of the shopper from a smartphone, plus his or her height, to calculate measurement and best fit. With this, the program builds a 3D image of the customer, which can be saved and used through multiple retailers.
What do you think of this technology? What is your typical experience with online shopping and sizing?
